Our Next General Meeting!

Jul 22, 2020 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Our Mission

The Felton Institute

Mike Krechevsky, BA Family Support Specialist
Phil Hershon, Peer Support Specialist

“One of the most troubling issues we face as parents of children with severe emotional and thinking disorders is the conflict between our desire to keep them safe without rendering them dependent. We know it is often hard to communicate with teens and young adults under the best of circumstances, and this is rendered more complex when they suffer from emotional and cognitive distress.
We will discuss coping strategies as well as outline the approach we take at our early intervention program and our mutual goal of having our kids lead fruitful authentic lives.”

The Felton Institute focuses on supporting individuals experiencing early psychosis and their families.  In this presentation Mike & Phil will go over the specifics of their two year program with a focus on recovery with an interdisciplinary team. Their approach includes therapy, medication as a bridge to recovery with a “low and slow” philosophy, peer counseling conducted by those with lived experience, psycho education and employment counseling, as well as family support with lived experience providers.  Mike will also share some interesting findings he has uncovered in the last three years that can help demystify the condition of early psychosis (Hint: Vincent Van Gough sold two paintings and a couple of drawings in his lifetime).

We look forward to welcoming Mike Krechevsky & Phil Hershon into our NAMI San Mateo community and learning together about treatments provided by the Felton Institute and the experience of early psychosis.
Felton Institute responds to human needs by providing cutting edge, evidence-based social services that transform lives.

Felton Institute can trace its roots back to 1889. The organization is named for Katharine “Kitty” Felton, its dedicated and maverick director known for tirelessly working to help children and families in need. Kitty Felton believed in the mandate that San Francisco citizens in crisis must have access to social services and resources in order to help them build upon their inherent strengths and develop self-sufficiency.

130 years later, Felton Institute remains the oldest nonsectarian, nonprofit social service provider in San Francisco.  Felton Institute serves clients throughout San Francisco, Alameda, Monterey, San Mateo and Kern counties.
